According to Information Week, a 2019 survey of IT decision-makers found that 93% were fully invested in AI programs, yet a lack of skilled professionals has slowed progress. A 2024 survey highlights that while 81% of IT professionals believe they can use AI, only 12% possess the necessary skills. Additionally, Reuters reports that this year, there will be a 50% hiring gap for AI-related positions, with 60% of IT decision-makers identifying AI as their greatest skills shortage. A 2022 Deloitte survey found only 22,000 AI specialists globally, further underscoring the urgent demand for AI talent.
"We are extremely excited to offer this new undergraduate major in AI, building on the success of our recent offering of an AI minor,” said Carroll associate professor of Computer Science Margaret Polk, Ph.D. “From all accounts, while there are AI courses and concentrations within majors found at other universities, our new major is one of only two strictly focused and so-named 'Major in Artificial Intelligence' offerings at the university undergraduate level in our geographic area."
Carroll’s AI major focuses on applying AI tools to tackle challenges posed by increasingly complex applications and processes. Courses within the program cover essential AI technologies such as machine learning algorithms, natural language understanding, speech synthesis, image recognition, logical reasoning, data analysis and robotics. The curriculum is designed to ensure students gain proficiency in the most sought-after AI skills and bridge the employment gap.
Beyond technical expertise, Carroll recognizes the critical importance of ethical considerations in AI. The program emphasizes topics such as bias in AI systems, responsible AI tool usage, transparency issues, workforce implications and broad societal concerns with AI implementation.
